17. Skin & Pain

Pain

  • Pain receptors (nociceptors) are widely distributed in the skin and other tissues.
  • Nociceptors are free nerve endings of sensory Aδ and un-myelinated C nerve fibers, which respond to tissue damage.
  • Stimulation of the nociceptors by tissue damage results in action potentials in the peripheral nerve fibers.
  • Three types of stimuli can activate pain receptors in peripheral tissues: mechanical (pressure, pinch), heat, and chemical.
